Features: Protect & Survive
Information Technology A very brief beginners overview of protecting yourself from the little nasties that creep onto your expensive computers and disrupt that busy day tryng to win a game of Solitaire!

Read more about virus checks, spyware and all those other little bothers...

The basic rules of self preservation are simple;

Anti Virus Software
Make sure you have an anti-virus program installed on every machine you own.

Ensure you download updates for the program on a regular basis. This can usually be scheduled from within the program to run at a convenient time and automatically perform the updates.

Make sure each machine is scanned for viruses regularly, again usually scheduled within the program.

Windows Update
Run Windows Update (from your Start menu or the Tools menu of Internet Explorer) on a regular basis or enable it to automatically check for updates. The critical updates and service packs section installs fixes to your machine for errors and vulnerabilities within Windows.

Office Update
It is advisable to run Microsoft Office Update, if you use this software, to fix errors and security issues in these programs.

Firewall
Run a firewall ? especially if you have a broadband internet connection. For single machines and small networks, a software firewall will suffice. Larger network protection will usually involve hardware.

Spyware/Malware
To protect privacy, download and install a spyware scanner. Spyware/Malware can cause more than annoying pop ups and can be more damaging than a lot of viruses. Removal tools are usually free and should be run regularly to ensure there is no malicious code on your system.

Windows XP
If you have Windows XP, make sure you have upgraded to Service Pack 2. If you have a broadband connection, you can download it from Windows Update. If not, a free CD can be obtained from Microsoft or from certain 'High Street' stores. Once installed, you have the most secure and up to date version of Windows and a handy little tool that monitors all security aspects on your machine and warns you of any potential problems.

All of the above can be achieved for free. There are perfectly good, free anti virus packages, spyware scanners and software firewalls available and both Windows and Office Update are free too. It just takes but a moment of your time. Like backups, if you don't do it, you will one day regret it.
